Seasoned journalist and media specialist Steve Smith is to step into the editorial driver’s seat of CAR. He joins SA’s leading men’s interest title on 18 June, becoming only the eighth editor in the automotive brand’s 56-year history.

Last night’s CAR Top 12 Awards yielded several surprises as the best vehicle buys in 12 categories were revealed at a gala dinner in Johannesburg. Changes in the categories meant that only four of last year’s category winners retained their titles for 2013 – the VW Polo (Best Light Hatch), Hyundai Elantra (Best Compact Saloon), Ford Ranger (Best Double Cab) and BMW 5 Series (Best Luxury Saloon).

The future is bright for engineering graduate Michael Garces de Gois: he has won the CAR Engineering Challenge 2012, sponsored by Isuzu – and secured a career as an automotive engineer with General Motors South Africa. He will join GM’s Graduate-in-Training Programme that starts in March.

With no formal training programmes in South Africa, opportunities to realise that dream are few – until now. CAR magazine has announced the launch of the Design a Car competition, in conjunction with two internationally acclaimed South African companies, Luma Animation and …XYZ Design.
