Ramsay Media
Cell phones, male models and the Malaysian Prime Minister
comments: 12
I’ve been struggling to find a way to best explain how mobile fits into Ramsay Media and what it can do for us. We’ve all heard the hype and I really don’t want to quote more stats and projected advertising revenues with numbers that look like actual cell phone numbers.
Cell phones have been compared to a lot of things; marketing and sales people see them as an electronic hand-held Eldorado - a mystical place with untold riches – and then there are the more cynical, who see them as prostitutes – the thin ones cost more.

But then I had a moment of clarity while watching Zoolander - a spoof on the male modelling industry – I realised that the comparisons between the admittedly thin story line and some of the issues faced by media publishers today are downright uncanny.

Web is like Derek Zoolander; he’s a legend, still cool, but a bit last season. Mobile is like Hansel; “He’s so hot right now!” And print... well I guess that would be their agent Maury Ballstein; he’s been around forever and knows everything about the industry. The journalists, editors and photographers are like Jacobim Mugatu; the creative genius that’s going to use both Derek and Hanzel to showcase his new range.

They have their ups and downs, view each other as a threat, but in the end they all work together to save the life of the Malaysian prime minister [Media Owners].

I guess what I’m trying to say is that if we work together we can achieve amazing things. And even though Hansel [mobile] is the new kid on the block – and we’ve heard all the hype about it being the next big thing – I think it’s time to realise it’s only ever going to be as good as the content. So in the words of JFK, “Don’t ask what mobile can do for you, but rather what you can do on mobile?”

RE: Not sure...
Thanks for the comment Terance. I don't think mobile will ever replace print, but I do think there is a place for both, and if publishers use it in the right way it can only enrich the reader/user experience. I have some great ideas for the Ramsay brands... so watch this space and don't turn your phone off just yet.

Not sure . . .
Great comments and well put; but I’m not sure mobile will become anything like agent Maury Ballstei is today. Look at your cell phone today; remember what it looked like 10 years ago - so imagine what the next ten years will create. Something very small and very high tech. Voice only most likely and you will be traceable to the closest inch. I don’t know, I’m just wondering here, but print for me is beautiful, practical and it really enriches one - I like my Nokia E71, but I also like it coz I can turn it off when I want to.

Yeah!
I think we need a "walk-off" between print, web and mobile!!!

What is this? A center for ants?
Awesome analogy. I agree completely and I think I speak for most web people when I say that we often underestimate the power of the small screen. Keep up the good work.

Mobile is King
Very quirky :-) ATL should look at mobile as part as their service offering as a whole, and not an extention thereof. MOBILE IS KING!

I agree!!
It's time print people realise that web and mobile are not a threat and that they can only enhance their offering if used correctly.

The sensible one
Ha ha... thanks "mom". And no I have an old brick of a phone, so, um... wouldn't know about the thin ones.

The sensible one
Not only good looking, funny and clever (no, it's not your mother here) but he speaks sense too! Very well put. So is that true about thin prostitutes Renato? Keep up the great work.

About time...
Great blog! How refreshing to read a ramsay blog that's not so serious. You made me laugh and you make a very valid point about content and tech. I look forward to your next one.

Content is king only if...
Ranato, I absolutely agree. In fact, I couldn't agree more. There's no point in implementing technology just for the sake of technology. That ship has sailed years ago. Technology need to fit in with real work campaigns, without which it will probably be useless.
